Self-discovery and Inner space

 

“Who has not deep in his heart

A dark castle of Elsinore

In the manner of men of the past

We build within ourselves stone

On stone a vast haunted castle”. (Vincent 1953)

I will continue to explore the relationship between individuals and space, as well as people’s self-discovery inner space. Also, I will then give my reflection on the centration and proposed by Piaget. In my works, I hope that viewers including me could attempt to make decentration of the space and look at problems in different ways or in different forms of space. I believe finding your place in space is a process of discovering and improving yourself.

French literary critic Gaston Bachelard gave his understanding of “happy space”. In his views, space is not a container or filler, but a dwelling place of human consciousness. I’m also impressed with the meaning of “house” in his mind. “Who will knock the door of the house? The open door, we step in, the closed door, like a den, the world pulsates outside our doors.” He told us in verse that the house provides an image of the past and a dream of the world. He mentioned that the more important than setting a date for recognising our inner space is setting a place of our inner space. (2014 ) Following this direction, the discovery could be called “topophilia”. His goal is to determine the human value of the space he processes. He studied a series of images which may be considered as things in the houses – “drawers, chests and wardrobes, what psychology lies behind their locks and keys!”(1964) With his pen, the daily trivial space in our life seems to carry endless poetry. At the same time, the highly abstract images and poetry are also constructed by means of peculiar space, written in the style of phenomenology of architecture and space. This work is a subtle interpretation of concrete or abstract spaces such as houses, corners, nets, shells and microcosm. For drawers, chests and wardrobes, it is a hidden, closed space, with unforgettable images of things inside. The past, present and future are also condensed there. For nest, shells and corners, the bird’s nest is a variation on the home, built from the inside, full of dreams and surprises, belief and happiness. The shelter of the shell is inseparable from its spiral shape. The corners with concentration are full of our forgotten and lonely memories. The microcosm is the abode of the great things that contain the properties. The microcosm is also a reversal of perspective, which can switch between big and small. From the tiny door of a miniature house, we find beauty within things. Bachelard gives examples of how poets create great images in a miniature world, such as the aster in apple, marriage in flowers, a miniature world in a glass bubble and so on. The image of space in Bachelard’s book explores dual meanings. The first meaning of “the image of space” refers to “images in space”, which includes the material images such as drawer, box and cabinet in the living spaces such as city, house and wooden house. It also contains natural physical images including nests and shells of the universe, spaces such as forests and solar systems as well as spatial forms in abstract spaces such as corners, microcosm and circles. However, he also talked more about the the images in space as the spatial images of human consciousness. For example, “house” expresses a kind of “protective” consciousness of human beings, while “corner” embodies a kind of “concealment” of spirit. The second implication, contain each other and form a group of spatial structures.

 

“What a spiral of human existence! We do not know immediately whether we are running toward the centre or away”. We can never know for sure what is inside and what is outside. We can only get closer and closer to existence without being sure that we are at its core. If Bachelard is trying to find the rest place of the soul in space, then Magritte is looking for the consciousness of primitive and fantasy, gender and death, absurdity and transcendence through his painting space. His painting is full of strong conflicts and divisions. He was the kind of true Baudelaire hero who introduced philosophy in solitude with philosophical speculation and tenacity. He likes to combine familiar things in a different way to achieve a completely different effect. He believed that “yes” and “no” were both important, and his paintings were intended to attack the predetermined thoughts and feelings of society. His works have a sense of timelessness and time solidification, and he likes to create a group of paintings with slightly different contents repeatedly at different times. With his clear, cold thinking, he belongs to the concrete surrealism characterised by concrete dreamlike images rather than the abstract surrealism of Miro. His commonly used techniques of expression are as follows: dealing with the structure of loneliness, mixing or changing things, changing the position and scale of objects and changing the texture to create conflict, accidental coincidence and contraction, dual visual images and concepts. These attributes of his works completely destroyed the separation of rationality and madness, seriousness and humour, fantasy and wakefulness and paraplegia in the traditional consciousness, thus changing the fact that artists could only find art prototype in the appearance world with poetic and mysterious unique ways. The poetic mystery can be explained by many things, but not by the mystery itself. In 1965, he creates “Carte Blanche” in this work. A lost woman in riding costume appeared in the forest. The horse was cut up by trees, flickering as in front/back of the tree. The women looked like in front of the trunk, which is like the trunk of the tree.

He implies that some contradictions are irreconcilable.

in the face of real space and imaginary space. In this regard, he proposed the “internal” and “external” dialectical theme. We know that insight is a form of gestalt psychology with artists embracing a sudden acceptance of a new relationship. The Epiphany is formed by the combination of visual acceptance and spiritual acceptance, which is the foundation of Magritte's successful image. He presents objects of extraordinary constancy. For instance, while rocks are heavy and still in his paintings which float in the air like clouds, it is like how a space astronaut would feel on the moon and it confirms the principles of modern physics. The same is true of Bachelard. In his work, he used to transfer his emotion through different objects such as the cage, rock, apple and so on. He makes them in different dimensions of space, “something in the mind”, according to Duchamp, “nothing but visible thought”, as Magritte would say. (1992) These two artists share their attitude that creates works that cannot be separated from thought. They believed that every image has sense and meaning. (1992 )“You use colours, but you paint with feeling.” – Chardin BBC

Anselm Kiefer said that he was inspired by Platonist and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. He claimed that they describe small things like dust on tables or chairs as a source of ideas. And one of his favourite poet called Adalbert Stifter also describes little things such as mountain, wave, grass, corn that gives access to an idea. So, it is not from the idea of the thing; it is from the thing to the idea.

Recently, I pay more attention to stones and put them in the inner space in my mind. Adalbert Stifter said that the little object can be an idea. In conventional thinking, materials such as stone and rock are considered hare things, indestructible and resilient. I am inspired by Magritte’s work, he used to paint various forms of stones in his picture , and put them in different spaces.

There’s a huge rock in the middle of a room, which filled the whole room, with a gap and window left on the left side of the picture, the atmosphere of air being solidified, time and space static, which is hard to breathe. At the same time, there are many questions coming to my mind. Why is there only one rock on the room? Why is this rock so huge? And we know that Magritte wants to express his emotion through this kind of layout. As he said, “my pictures, while depicting objects which are so familiar, nonetheless raise questions again and again. Look at the one with an apple, for example, you no longer understand what is so mysterious about it, nor what it is illustrating…”  The viewers are left with mysterious and endless imagination. I also find in Richard Serra’s work, he creates the sculpture of spiraling form or the curving, linear wave of a steel plate in huge space. Most of his sculpture consists of straight rather than curved plates with each freestanding but together configured as an irregular zigzag. From the angles of its seven elements, which vary from commodious and accommodating ones to tight and confining ones, the sculpture generates six semi-interior spaces. The viewers’ physical and emotional feeling will continually shift with seeing sculptures in either a clockwise or counterclockwise manner. Serra said it is a process that allows him to put himself in the space, to understand space in terms of his physical movement. ( 1994)

 

In my recent studies, I want to explore the people who are living in inner space and to look for my spiritual mind. Like Bachelard’s works, different places provide people with different emotions, meanwhile, objects in different places provide different spiritual needs. In my work, every scene has its own meaning. I try to put different objects in it, such as cage, float canvas, rocks and so on. I used to draw a brunet tone in my work, large areas of turquoise contrast with white, and lots of vertical lines with objects often placed in the centre of the picture, forming visually contrast in it. It is also interpreted as different meanings. As to the afore-mentioned rock, I want to find a stubborn area in my mind, it has a hard-external form and gives me more power. I used to stay alone in the internal space, and think about what the meaning of ourselves is, why we are staying here and what should we do in it. We’ve lost ourselves in the inner space because we do and say things over and over again. Sometimes, we even forget who we are. And we also try to fit in it, actually, it is a process ofdecentration. We lose our particular essence in it and try “to abolish itself, to efface itself.”(BBC) On the other hand, we cannot balance this relationship. In fact, self-centration and decentration are a process of communication and mutual transformation.

In inner space, it is important to face yourself and others and find a proper area in it, dealing with inner contradictions and struggles. As xubing said he wanted to make a space for language ,when the audience enter to the space, they would surrounded by all these large pieces.To think calmly the relationship between people and space, it is like to make the dialogues between people and space, such as putting forward some questions to space. In space, we can compare ourselves to any object, such as a chair, a stone, a mirror and so on. As a viewer, how to place these objects in space embodies different definitions. Therefore, the states of different objects in different spaces are formed. As an artist , I want to through my painting to make a converstion with people and space, at the same time to stimulate more thinking in my work. Trying to find a place in space is a process of discovering and improving yourself is the most important thing in my dailylife.
